Here is a case that I absolutely loved to do. This patient wanted a smile makeover before her wedding, we had quite a short timeframe and thankfully she had beautiful straight teeth and realistic goals, so we were confident in delivering the results desired in time for her big day.

She first visited us requesting enamel contouring to reduce the bumps on the edges of her front teeth. These small bumps, called “mamelons” are a developmental feature of adult incisors that are most noticeable when the teeth first erupt in childhood. They normally wear down in the first few years, however, sometimes they do not, particularly if the front teeth don’t contact each other, as in this case.

I am particularly fond of mamelons, and regretfully agreed to reduce them for the patient, but not before we had discussed some other enhancements that I thought would add to her smile. She wasn’t keen on the “pointiness” of the teeth, so I suggested we carried out a “trial smile”, mocking up how it would look to alter the shape of the lateral incisors and canines. After the patient approved this, the final treatment plan was decided for tooth whitening to lighten and brighten the teeth, contouring of upper central incisors and lower four incisors, and composite bonding for four teeth, upper lateral incisors and canines.

I would have loved to have kept a hint of mamelon, but it of course it wasn’t about me, and the patient was delighted with the final result.
